I worked within a small team, designing approximately 75 products per year. I worked with the category developers and manage projects for our internal clients. The clients are industry specialists who brief us on market requirements. The majority of sales are via annual catalogues through direct marketing. Due to the annual cycle most of NPD is currently researched, designed, developed and in-stock within a year. To increase efficiency I worked with our clients to create ‘pre-concept’ ideas, where I researched areas to ‘get ahead’ of the catalogue cycle, this gave us the time to develop more thoroughly and user-test products. I managed the design from initial handover through to complete sign off at the first delivery of stock. We worked to high quality and safety standards from the early stages making sure all products pass the Toy Safety legislations for the UK and all tradable countries.
Prototyping in clay, foam and 3D prints worked well to illustrate scale, textures and functional aspects to the client. We also created prototypes for photography/marketing material for the upcoming catalogue before tooling samples were available. I sent all CAD to suppliers with technical drawings and rendering using Keyshot. The products vary greatly from outdoor furniture to multi-component injection parts. I am happy in a high pressure environment, balancing my workload and self managing projects.
